Abstract

1,212,065. Plate heat exchangers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 24 Jan., 1968 [11 April, 1967], No. 3660/68. Heading F4S. In a cross-flow plate and fin type heat exchanger wherein spaced parallel plates define therebetween passages for heat exchange fluids, e.g. fuel and air, leakage passages, e.g. 76, 84, 92 are interposed therebetween to avoid mixing of the fuel and air if leakage should occur through any of the exchange plates. Spaced parallel closure bars, e.g. 108, 110 and 116, 118 are provided at the sides of the fuel and air passages in directions parallel to the respective fluid flows. The interposed leakage passages are sealed from the air and fuel headers 56, 44, Fig. 3, by closure members 58, 66. Openings, e.g. 112, 114, 120, 124, 126 communicate adjacent leakage passages through the channels defined between the spaced closure bars. Any leakage fluid is finally expelled through an outlet vent 70. Corrugated fins 54, Fig. 3, are located in the leakage passages to aid heat transfer between the fuel and air. The fuel and air passages are also provided with fins (42, Figs. 2, 4).
