Abstract

Relates to parallel-plate heat exchangers in which each plate of a stack has a corrugated central zone 2 terminating short of the plate margins where triangular zones are formed for the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanging fluids to or from the plate interspaces generally as described in Specification 1,048,122. The end zones as shown, preferably contain corrugated guide plates providing ducts 6 and 10 for guiding the respective fluid streams D and E across the plate surface. The stack comprises plates A and B alternating through the stack and the invention comprises sealing each plate (a) along edges 12 to one adjacent plate in the stack so defining entry and exit paths for the fluid E as shown in Fig. 5, and (b) along edges 14 and 16 to the other adjacent plate whereby the space between the sealed edge portions 16 of adjacent plate pairs defines entry and exit paths for the fluid D as shown in Fig. 7 whilst between the corresponding portions 14 the space is sealed by spacers 18, Fig. 7 (and Fig. 8). Further spacers 20, Fig. 4 (and Fig. 10), are inserted between the plate pairs at the corners of the assembly. The ends of some of the spacers 18 may be shaped to serve as corner spacers.
