Abstract

1,267,027. Plate heat exchangers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 10 Sept., 1970 [4 Nov., 1969], No. 43302/70. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger core comprising plates, and corrugated fin elements 63, 65 and closure bars stacked to provide alternating flow spaces for a hot fluid and a cool fluid respectively, the closure bars 22, 24 in the cool fluid flow spaces are C-shaped in cross-section, and the corrugated fin elements 65 in the hot fluid flow spaces are cut back from the inlet face of the heat exchanger core to reduce heat input to the C- shaped closure bars and thereby eliminate cracks occurring in the core. The C-shaped closure bars nearest the ends of the core are provided with fins 46, 48 whereas those near the centre of the core are not (see Fig. 3). In addition the closure bars decrease in width from the end flow spaces towards the centre flow spaces of the core (see Fig. 3). Square section closure bars 68 close the hot fluid spaces.
