Abstract
970,299. Plate-type heat exchangers. UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS Inc. June 21, 1962 [June 21, 1961], No. 23927/62. Heading F4S. A plate-type heat exchanger as shown' Fig. 1, comprises a stack of identical rectangular plates 10, each having a pair of opposite sides turned over to form flanges 12, Fig. 7, with inturned lips 13, and a main portion 14 recessed to leave lands 15 at the edges normal to the flanged sides, the plates 10 being stacked with alternate plates inverted to form a first group of flow paths 16 and a second group of interposed flow paths 17 normal to the first group. Metal foil strip fins 18 and 19 may be installed in the flow paths. The lips 13, Fig. 7, are formed sloping slightly away from the plane of the plate, so that when the stack of plates is clamped together for brazing, the lips are compressed until parallel with the main portions of the plates, to ensure a good contact between adjacent lips 13, and adjacent lands 15. Any strip fins fitted are simultaneously compressed to give good contact with the plates. The lips 13, and part or all of the flanges 12, may be strengthened by folding back the edge of the sheet material upon itself to give double thickness, Fig. 10.
