In a plate heat exchanger wherein the plates are separated by sealing strips which form the boundaries of the interspaces between the plates, one heat exchange medium flowing through alternate interspaces and a second medium flowing through the remaining interspaces, bracing members are fitted between adjacent plates at the places where the heat exchange media enter and leave the interspaces to prevent warping of the unsupported thin plate members at these places. Each bracing member is of sheet metal, with tongues bent out normal to the plane of the member, all in the same direction, the tongues being curved lenthwise, their lengthwise direction being substantially parallel with the flow direction of the respective heat exchange medium. Various tongue configurations are described, e.g. Figs. 4 and 5, the height of the tongues not necessarily being as great as the width of the cut-outs from which they are bent. Where the heat exchanger plates have grooves in which the sealing strips are seated, the tongues may register with the sealing strips, the bracing members being fixed to one of the plates. Where a sealing frame 16, Fig. 2, is used between adjacent plates, the bracing members 2 may be fixed to the frame.
