A heat exchanger plate has a plurality of sinuous corrugations 22, 23 extending over the central portion 21 of the plate. The rectangular plate shown has along two opposite sides a pair of ports 12, 13 and along the other two sides a pair of ports 14, 15. A gasket 20 (see Specification 1,035,170), extends around the periphery of the plate and also completely surrounds the ports 12, 13 isolating these from the central zone 21 of the plate. In a plate stack forming a heat exchanger, alternate plates are as shown (i.e. with the corrugations extending generally parallel to the ports 12, 13), and the intermediate plates are similar but have the corrugations generally parallel to the ports 14, 15. Alternate plates in the stack are turned through 90 degrees whereby in all the plates the corrugations extend in the same direction and in each plate, each pair of ports is aligned with the other pair in the next adjacent plates; e.g. 12, 13 of one plate are aligned with 14, 15 of the plates on either side thereof. Two sets of fluid passages are thereby formed in the stack. In one set of passages one fluid flows in a turbulent manner along the corrugations and in the other set of passages the other fluid flows in a turbulent manner across the corrugations.
