Abstract

793,525. Heat exchangers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and WARD, T. H. May 20, 1955 [May 21, 1954], No. 14970/54. Class 64(3) In a heat exchanger, e.g. a radiator or oil cooler comrpising a plurality of plates separated by spacing means and defining therewith fluid pasages at least some of which are connected to header tanks, each header tank is bonded by a lap joint 30 (Fig. 3) to bent-up terminal portions of spacing elements 3. In the apparatus shown, the elements 3 are of channel-shaped crosssection, are disposed in alternate spaces between the plates 1 and define therewith passages 28 extending at right angles to and alternating with other passages 26 which communicate with headers 25, 27. Each passage 26 is defined by a pair of the plates 1 spaced apart by a re-entrant flange 21 extending along one edge of each plate (see Fig. 2). The side walls 7, 9 of each spacing element 3 are bonded to neighbouring plates 1 and the end walls or terminal portions of the element, e.g. as indicated at 13 in Fig. 3, are each secured by the aforesaid lap joint 30 to the header tank.
