Abstract

1,264,374. Plate heat exchangers. AQUACHEM Inc. 20 June, 1969 [27 June, 1968], No. 31360/69. Heading F4S. In a heat exchange plate formed with projections 68 and with a recessed portion, all extending in a direction away from a plane surface 20 of the plate, the recessed portion of the plate includes a gasket recess with a continuous wall 74, Fig. 10, adjacent the plate periphery, and the projections 68 are located in the marginal zone of the plate outwardly beyond the wall 74. In use, the projections 68 act as spacers in a stack of such plates with intervening gaskets 14 and with alternate plates rotated 180 degrees in the plane of the plate, the projections being so disposed that in such a stack the projections on one plate abut planar areas on an adjacent plate as shown in Fig. 10. The plate shown has a corrugated central zone 36 in which the corrugations (Fig. 8) are so disposed that in a plate stack, the corrugations of adjacent plates cross each other to form a tortuous path for the fluid. The plate also has six ports 22-27, three at each end, for the conveyance of fluid to and from the plate interspaces. The gasket 14 is a one-piece gasket having for each of the ports 22-27 an encircling ring portion (14<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 4-6). In use, for a particular plate interspace, the inlet and outlet ports for that space are provided by cutting away the gasket leaving the remaining ports still encircled by the gasket ring portions 14<SP>1</SP>.
