Abstract

1386578 Plate heat exchangers ALFALAVAL AB 13 March 1973 [14 March 1972] 11913/73 Heading F4S In a plate heat exchanger of the kind wherein adjacent ported plates are separated by peripheral gaskets 9 received in gasket grooves 27 and wherein the region of each plate defining a distribution zone (e.g. 6, Fig. 1) between an inlet port (e.g. 1) and a main heat exchanging zone (7) is formed with a plurality of parallel ridges (21, Fig. 2) separated by troughs (22), the inwardly facing side wall of the ridge 21b which bounds the gasket groove 27 along one side of the distribution zone (6) is locally recessed at spaced intervals along its length so that the adjacent trough 22a extends into the recesses 31 to provide wider trough portions at the spaced intervals. The ridges and troughs of adjacent plates are arranged to cross and contact one another at the wider trough portions, i.e. along the dotted lines 23a, to provide good interplate support. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), the region (33) of the trough between adjacent recesses is shallower than the region opposite the recesses.
