Abstract

1,236,014. Plate type heat exchangers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 10 April, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 17365/67. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger matrix comprising a plurality of stacked metal or ceramic plates, each plate 1 is embossed with rows of regularly spaced four-sided pyramidal projections and indentations having crests 2, 3 respectively. The matrix shown in Fig. 3 is formed from two series of plates, viz. deep and shallow plates, having pyramidal projections of different apex angles and which together define first and second fluid channels 16, 19. In another arrangement (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) pairs of shallow plates defining therebetween first fluid channels are spaced apart by interposed deep plates which constitute secondary heat exchange surfaces in the second fluid flow channels defined between adjacent pairs of shallow plates. In a further arrangement (Figs. 9-12, not shown) the matrix comprises deep plates of the type shown in Fig. 1 alternating with another type of plate (Fig. 7, not shown) having similar shaped four-sided pyramidal projections and indentations, but wherein the base sides of all the projections lie substantially in a common plane and provide the crests of furrow-shaped indentations. The projections and indentations may have flat-topped crests to facilitate spot welding together adjacent plates at the points of contact. The description states that the projections may comprise three-sided pyramids.
