Abstract

901,914. Plate heat exchangers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 22, 1960 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 41030/59. Class 64 (3). A heat exchanger comprises stacked plates, the plates being embossed with rows of foursided pyramidal projections and adjacent indentations resulting in the plates being corrugated in two directions at right angles to each other, such that the cross-sectional flow area is constant. Plates 1 consist of thin metal sheets embossed with the four-sided pyramids having rounded crests. Every sheet may be embossed or the exchanger may consist of alternate flat and embossed sheets. If every sheet is embossed they may be supported by means of rods 3 drilled through holes 2 such that the projections of one plate come into contact with the indentations of the next. If no rods are used, then either the projections must be affixed to the indentations of the adjacent plate or spacers must be placed between the edges of the plates. If alternate flat sheets are used, then the assembly does not require such accurate alignment of the plates as when only embossed sheets are used, but the method of supporting is the same. The plate interspaces are made into ducts by sealing certain lengths of the plates by sealing bars 4. Various types of sealing bars are disclosed in Fig. 5 (not shown).
