Abstract

1,242,397. Heat exchangers. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. 6 Sept., 1968 [13 Sept., 1967; 19 April, 1968, Nos. 41849/67 and 18741/68. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger, particularly a radiator core, is made from metal foil (i.e. sheet material not thicker than 0À012 inch) and consists of members 1, e.g. tubes spaced apart to define passages therebetween which are occupied by transverse fins 5 having areas 6 which extend generally parallel to and are bonded to the walls of the members 1, adjacent fins converging towards each other as shown. The elements of the heat exchanger are bonded together by an adhesive in which case the elements may be pre. coated with the adhesive. The fin surface may be dimpled or louvred (Fig. 3). The tubular members are preferably made from two sheets of the foil separated by edge spacers of metal or plastics material (Fig. 4b); or the sheet edges may be suitable shaped as shown in Fig. 2 or alternatively in Fig. 4a, not shown. In the core shown the tubular members 1 extend between tube plates 8 of thicker sheet material and the sides of the core are protected by plates 9 bonded to the fins and to the tube plates. Header tanks (not shown) which may be of metal or of plastics material are bonded to the tube plates 8. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,116,620.
