Abstract

1,165,173. Making heat exchangers; soldering. MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd. 24 July, 1967 [19 Aug., 1966], No. 37312/66. Headings B3A, B3J and B3R. [Also in Division F4] A heat exchanger, e.g. a radiator matrix, comprises a stack of hollow plate elements 2 each formed by two identical plates 3 having one or more flanges lipped over an unflanged portion of the other plate. The plates 3 are pressed from sheet copper alloy, aluminium or steel and are sealed together by brazing, soldering or by a thermosetting adhesive, e.g. an epoxy resin, which may be applied during assembly or upon completion of the stack, or applied to the plates while in sheet form. Each element 2 is provided with inlet and outlet chambers 13 joined by two separate passages. The chambers 13 are each connected to an adjacent element of the stack by a flange 9 which is lipped over the edge of an aperture 8 of the adjacent element, to form inlet and outlet headers. An expansible anvil and a punch are used for this purpose. Inlet and outlet pipes to and from the headers are provided at or intermediate the ends thereof. If oil is to be passed through the heat exchanger, a turbulator is located within each passage of the elements 2. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,024,350.
