Abstract

1344360 Making heat exchangers; jointing SOC ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970] 26388/71 Headings B3A and B3V A method of making a heat exchanger, e.g. a radiator of the type having a plurality of tubes having fins thereon or corrugated strips therebetween, the tubes 1 being located in tube plates 3 and the plates being connected to respective header boxes of synthetic thermoplastic resin material, wherein a header box 4 is sealingly secured to the periphery of the tube plate 3 by gripping the plate edge between the box 4 and a keeper member 9, which is deformed under pressure between members 13 and 14 and subjecting the pressed joint to vibrations of ultrasonic frequency which bonds the keeper member 9 to the header box 4. A sealing ring 11 may be located between the plate member 3 and the header box 4 or between the keeper 9 and the plate 3. Alternatively, the edge of the header box may be constructed with an extending lip 25 or ridge (29), Fig. 6 (not shown), which is deformed under pressure and ultrasonic vibration to enclose the edge of the tube plate 3. The tubes, tube plates and fins &c. of the radiator may be made of, brass, stainless steel, copper or tube plate may be made of synthetic plastics material and the connection between these parts may be made by any known means such as welding brazing gluing &c. All parts may be made of aluminium.
