Abstract

1,068,254. Heat exchangers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 4, 1964 [June 20, 1963], No. 24653/63. Heading F4S. A fin and tube matrix for a heat exchanger is made by feeding a continuous strip of aluminium, copper, steel or plastics material through a punching machine, punching out apertures at required spaced intervals along said strip and pressing the strip to form collars around the apertures, coating the strip with epoxy resin and partly curing it, cutting the strip into lengths to form individual heat exchange fins, assembling the fins together with the or each collar of each fin being aligned and mated with the or each corresponding collar of the next adjacent fin or fins and bonding the cooperating collars together with the resin so that each set of bonded co-operating collars forms a tube. Louvres, slots, corrugations and/or spacers may be formed in the fins. The collars may be frusto-conical or stepped to facilitate mating and may have circular, oval or rectangular cross-sections. Support plates may be sandwiched between some pairs of fins, and if the plates are thicker than the pitch of the fins, spacing collars may be used. The fins may be partly embedded in an epoxy resin support block.
