Abstract

1,077,007. Finned-tube heat exchangers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 5, 1964 [June 11, 1963], No. 23165/63. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger comprises fluid ducts 10 with external fin surfaces 11, separated by spacers 12 and comprising a plurality of discontinuous surfaces 11a in line across the flow path of a second gaseous fluid, and a plurality of continuous surfaces 11c arranged between groups of said discontinuous surfaces so as to interrupt the discontinuities. The discontinuities 11a are formed by depressing part of the surface and partially separating this section to form gaps 11b. The continuous surfaces 11c are spaced at intervals less than half of the shortest wave-length of an audible wave in the gaseous fluid to prevent standing waves. The surfaces may comprise a number of groups of strip members arranged in planes parallel to each other the discontinuities being the gaps between the strips and the continuous surfaces comprising strip members arranged to interrupt a free path through said gaps. The ducts 10 may be provided with radial fins having holes to increase gas turbulence. The use of plain fins at suitable intervals are again used to prevent setting up of standing waves as do surfaces 11c.
