Abstract
982,044. Heat exchange elements. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. May 30, 1961, No. 19565/61. Heading F4S, A turbulizer element intended for insertion in the fluid passage of a heat exchanger, comprises a corrugated metal strip with the corrugations arranged in successive groups 12 disposed side-by-side along the direction of the longitudinal axis of the strip (indicated by the double arrow in Fig. 1), each group comprising corrugations 14, 24 at different angles to a transverse axis 16 of the strip, thereby providing a plurality of tortuous fluid flow paths through the element. In the form shown the corrugations of the groups 12 are arranged in sections 11, 11a. The corrugations in groups 11 extend along lines 15 at one angle to the axis 16 and the corrugations in groups 11a extend along lines 17 at an opposite angle to the axis 16. A primary sinuous flow path is thus provided for fluid flowing over the turbulizer element in the genera] direction 16. A secondary sinuous flow path of greater frequency than the primary path is provided (as denoted by the arrow in Fig. 2) by forming the corrugations 24 (i.e. those separating adjacent corrugations 14) at a slight angle to the corrugations 14. The turbulator may be placed in the heat exchanger so that the fluid flow in a general direction along the corrugations (as shown), or in a general direction at right-angles thereto (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). The turbulator may be used in an annular passage, or in a generally " flat " passage of the heat exchanger.
