Abstract

1405300 Making heat exchangers GUNNAR OLAF VESTERGAARD RASMUSSEN 14 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971 8 Dec 1972] 57739/72 Headings B3A and B3E [Also in Division F4] In the making of a finned-tube assembly for a heat exchanger (see Division F4) in which H- shaped fins 4 (e.g. of steel or aluminium and from 0À7 to 1 mm. thick) are positioned on tubes 6, tube stock is held in a tube carrying means such as a clamp 27, 28, and the fins 4 (punched as flat blanks from sheet material, see Fig. 7) are positioned between combs 22 mounted on a rail 23. Thereafter, the rail is moved horizontally by means 34 (to the right as shown in Fig. 5) so that the fins, supported by the combs, are forced on to the tubes and in the same operation the fin edges are bent over by the rollers 25, 26 to form flanges 7 as shown in Fig. 4. After cutting the tubes to length, the tube assembly can be removed by a relative vertical movement either of the rail 23 or of the tube assembly itself. In a subsequent operation (not shown) cover plates (e.g. 1a, 1b, 1c, Fig. 2, or 81, Fig. 22) are attached by being bent over at their edges, to the fins. The tube assembly shown has a single vertical row of the tubes 6. For a tube assembly comprising several side-by-side vertical tube rows, intermediate combs 52 may be necessary as shown in Fig 24. Where also the rail 62 carrying the combs is shown as being mounted on rollers 65, movement of the rail to force the fins on to the tubes, being effected by a cylinder 70. An alternative tube clamping means is described (Figs. 26, 27).
