Abstract

1,204,675. Plate heat exchangers. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. 31 Jan., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 4971/67. Addition to 1,116,621. Heading F4S. In one modification of the heat exchanger of the parent invention the web portions 4 between adjacent fins 3 of each sheet element 2 are depressed or deformed outwardly as indicated at 4a in Fig. 1, thus forming a fluid passageway 1 which is sinuous when the opposite fins 3 are arranged in staggered relationship. The region 5 at the base of each fin 3 is also slightly depressed outwardly as shown. The fins 3 formed on either side of the passageway 1 may alternatively be arranged in aligned relationship. In another modification of the parent invention shown in Fig. 4, each pair of sheet elements are spaced apart by edge strips 24 made of a plastics material to which the elements are adhesively bonded, thus defining sealed fluid passages 23. Preferably the strips 24 have tapering outer edges. The fins 13 (and also the fins 3, Fig. 1) may be provided with dimples 25 or other means for increasing the heat exchange area.
