Abstract

1344831 Plate heat exchangers ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970 11 Jan 1971] 10478/70 and 1314/71 Heading F4S A flow passage in a heat exchanger is formed by a stacked series of wall-forming members and apertured, heat-conducting, plate members all bonded together by an adhesive providing a thermally insulating barrier and reducing heat flow between adjacent members of the assembly. The apertures in successive plate members may be relatively staggered. The plates may be of copper or aluminium and the wall-forming members of a thermally insulating material, of a plastics material or of metal. Thermally insulating washers may be interposed between the wall-forming and plate members. As shown, two fluid passages are formed by a stack of plates 21 and rings 25, 28. When assembled, perforated parts of the plates extend across the fluid passages, and the rings are aligned with imperforate parts of the plates. In other arrangements (Figs. 2-4) applicable either to cross-flow or parallel flow heat exchangers, individual plate areas covered by groups of the apertures and outlined by the wallforming members are hexagonal or sectorshaped. A cross-flow heat exchanger is described, Fig. 5c (and Figs. 5a-5b) in which sheet members with two sets (62, 63) of apertures therein are stacked alternately with wallforming members (65). These latter co-operate with plane portions (64) of the sheets to form flow passages (66) with the apertured sheet portions (62) extending across the passages. The other apertures (63) comprise louvres some of which may be pressed out in the opposite sense to others from the sheet material. In another cross-flow heat exchanger described (Figs. 6a, 6b) flow of one of the fluids is parallel to plate areas which may be apertured or not. The apertures when provided serve in this case as turbulators.
