Abstract
574,210. Heat-exchangers. BELAIEFF, J. F., DELANY, C. T., and GALLAY, Ltd. Jan. 17, 1944, No. 879. [Class 64 (iii)] A heat-exchanger, in which, e.g., air is heated by the exhaust gases of an aircraft engine, comprises a number of elements such as 10, 20, Fig. 7 in the form of flat plates 11, 21 each having attached to one side a corrugated sheet 12, 23 respectively and to the other side a corrugated sheet 13, 22, the corrugations in the two sheets 12, 23 being disposed at right angles to those in the sheets 13, 22, and the plates 11, 21 being assembled so that the crests of the corrugations 12, 23 abut as shown and the crests of the corrugations 13, 22 abut similar corrugations on adjacent elements; preferably the sheets are secured to the corresponding plates by spot welding at the bottoms of the valleys of the corrugations. The elements may be positively locked together by pins 30 which engage every third corrugation, say, in abutting sheets, the hills of such corrugations being slotted at 16, 17, 26, 27 in the sheets 12, 13, 23, 22 respectively and the portions 18, 19, 28, 29 between the slots being pressed outwardly to conical form, these conical portions coacting with the slots to accommodate the said pins. Opposite edges of the plates may be closed by channel members 36 as shown. In a modification, Fig. 9, a pair of elements constituted-by plates 41, 42 with corrugated sheets 43, 45 and 44, 46 respectively are secured together by pressing-out the plate at suitable points to form abutting dimples 47, 48 which are welded together at 49, the sheets 43, 44 being cut away to provide apertures through which the dimples may project, and the sheets 45, 46 being similarly apertured for the passage of welding heads and also having some of the corrugations slotted and outwardly pressed at 53, 55 to receive locking pins as in the previous construction.
