Abstract

848,095. Plate type heat exchangers. STANDARD MOTOR CO. Ltd., and HAMBLING, S. K. Feb. 26, 1958 [May 20, 1957], No. 15886/57. Class 64(3) A heat exchanger comprises a plurality of hollow elements each consisting of two spaced corrugated plates interconnected at their ends, the corrugations of each element being bridged both inside and outside the element thereby providing a plurality of flow paths within and externally of the element for the respective heat exchanging fluids. In the preferred arrangement a plurality of elements are arranged in the form of an annulus, combustion air being passed through the elements and receiving heat from hot gases flowing over the elements. Figs. 1 and 3 show a pair of elements each comprising a corrugated plate 11 and a corrugated plate 12 the ends of which plates converge towards each other as shown. The radially outer mating ends of the element plates 11, 12 engage the flanges 13 of a channel member 14 and the spaces between the flanges 13 and the plates 11, 12 due to the corrugations are sealed as by welding or brazing at 15. At the radially inner ends of the element plates 11, 12 the corrugations intermesh along an edge 16 and are joined by welding or brazing. Fluid passages within each element are formed by plates 19, 20 which bridge the corrugations in the manner shown and are joined by transverse plates 21, 22 so that an air inlet header and an air outlet for the element, interconnected by the passages defined by corrugations and the plates 19, 20 are formed. Adjacent elements are secured together thereby forming passages 29 (see Fig. 3) for the heating gas flowing over the elements. The corruagtions in any one element may be parallel (as shown) or oblique with respect to an adjacent element. The element plates may be formed by bending a single plate. The flow paths externally of the elements may be defined by flat plates engaging the crests of the corrugations on the outer side of each plate.
