Abstract
1,153,403. Plate heat exchanger. TRANE CO. 15 Sept., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966], No. 42118/67. Heading F4S. A plate heat exchanger comprises a plurality of spaced rectangular metallic separator plates 12 defining therebetween flat fluid conducting passages 16, 22, the passages 16 having fin packing 36 extending between a common inlet header 18 and a common outlet header 20 of the passage so as to establish a uniform fluid distribution across the passage(see Fig. 5), the passages 22 are of similar construction to passages 16, but each contains means for withdrawing through a header 28 a portion of the heat exchange fluid passing through the passage with - out disturbing said uniform distribution, said means (see Fig. 7) comprise a baffle plate 52 intermediate the ends of the passage and spaced substantially parallel relationship with the separator plates 12 defining the passage, a first heat exchange fin packing member 54 disposed on one side of said baffle plate allowing the fluid to continue in the same direction as in the fin packing 46, a second fin packing member 56 disposed at the other face of the said baffle to conduct fluid in a direction transverse to fluid flow in the packing 46, said first and second fin packing members being in communication through apertures 63 in the baffle, and a port 28, adjacent the heat exchanger to collect the portion of the fluid having said second fin packing member. Fin sections 54 and 56 are formed by corrugating a metallic sheet having slotted perforations 58 therein, fin packing 36 is comprized of a layer of corrugated sheet metal such as aluminium wherein each corrugation is provided with a series of off-set portions (see Fig. 9, not shown). In operation, a first heat exchange fluid passes completely through the passages 16, while the second fluid passes along the passage 22 only as far as the upstream flange 62 of the baffle plate 52, the fluid then channeling into fin section 54 where a controllable portion can pass through the apertures 63 into fin section 56 and port 28.
