Abstract

1,128,018. Plate heat exchangers. PALL CORP. 16 Feb., 1966 [23 Feb., 1965], No. 6834/66. Heading F4S. A heat-exchanger comprises a housing 1 formed of two parts 4, 5 of L-shaped crosssection, inlet and outlet openings 16, 17 and 20, 21 (see Fig. 2) being formed in the housing for the heat-exchanging fluids, the interior of the housing 1 being divided into two chambers 11, 12 each carrying one of the fluids, by a corrugated heat-conducting plate 10 of metal or synthetic plastics material formed into convolutions 30, and the ends 9 of the plate 10 being welded in fluid-tight manner between the two parts 4, 5 of the housing 1. The convolutions 30 as shown are parallel to one another, but they may be spaced to form V-shaped passages therebetween, or arranged to fit any irregular volume, or to afford spacing according to fluid consistency and viscosity. The device is fabricated by first corrugating the plate, and then bending the corrugated plate into convolutions, each bend comprising a flat portion 42 which may be a straightened-out corrugation, or may be provided in the initial stage of corrugation of the plate. Separators 40 are inserted between adjacent convolutions 30, which separators provide means for access of the heat-exchanging fluids to their respective passages 44, 45 formed by the corrugations in the plate 10 in the plate, and also provide interconnections between adjacent passages, thus minimizing the effects of clogging. For this purpose the separators 40 may be corrugated plates (Figs. 5, 6, 8) of similar or different material to the corrugated plate 10, the corrugations of the separators extending transversely of the corrugations of the plate 10. Alternatively, the separators may comprise substantially flat plates, in which case dimples or depressed portions are formed in the plate 10, or the separators 40 are provided with louvres or apertures. Additional turbulence may be imparted to the heat-exchanging fluids by means of dimples and depressions (Figs. 11, 12) or ribs (Fig. 10) formed on the plate 10 before it is corrugated, or by cross corrugations (52, Fig. 9) in the plate 10.
