Abstract
907,839. Plate-type heat exchangers. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Feb. 4, 1959 [Feb. 11, 1958], No. 4463/58. Class 64 (3). A heat exchanger comprises a plate assembly of cylindrical form consisting of two plates 1, narrow side walls 3, 3a, wide side walls 2, 2a, and corrugated strips 4 arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 9, the strip being then wound on to a cylinder 6 to form an annulus. Radially extending portions 10 at each end face of the annulus are thereafter cut out to a depth equal to the width of the narrow side walls 3, 3a so that alternate radially spaced channels for one of the heat exchanger fluids formed between adjacent plates 1 open out on one side of the annulus and the intermediate channels through which the other fluid flows, open out to the other side of the annulus. Slots 11 extending almost to the corrugated plates 4 are formed to receive the outlet headers 12, 13 for the respective fluids. The arrows in Fig. 6 show the resulting flow path for one of these fluids in this case air, which enters the heat exchanger at one side through the openings formed by alternate cutaway portions 10, passes through corrugations of the sheet 4 to spaces 17 from which the air is diverted through other corrugations of the sheet 4 into the air outlet headers 12 located on the air inlet side of the heat exchanger. On the other face of the annulus, heating gas flows similarly from openings formed by cut-away portions (similar to the cut-away portions 10) through the intermediate passages in the annulus to gas outlet headers 13. An outer sealing band 14 (Fig. 8) is formed with apertures 15 in alignment with the air and heating gas outlet headers 12, 13. Specification 823,951 is referred to.
