Abstract

1419840 Plate heat exchangers AVCO CORP 15 Aug 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 38580/73 Heading F4S A heat exchanger plate stack comprises plates 11a, 11b alternating through the stack and having therein a series of corrugations (34 in plates 11a and 40 in plates 11b) generally parallel to one another throughout the stack, the plates 11b having in addition in their primary heat exchange zone (i.e. between the two corrugations 36, 38) a second series of corrugations 42 extending generally at right angles to the first series and so forming a "waffle" pattern surface in said zone. An assembly of annular plates is shown wherein hot gas from a turbine flows generally radially outwardly through alternate plate interspaces which are open at the inner and outer boundary of the annulus (Fig. 5), whilst air flows and is heated in the intermediate plate interspaces which are in communication with inlet ducts 20 and outlet ducts 22 extending axially through the plate stack. The air path in each alternate plate interspace is, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3, from an inlet duct 20 leading via crossflow channels at the radially outer end of the air interspace, through the primary heat exchange zone formed between the corrugations 36, 38 in contra flow to the gas flow in adjacent plate interspaces, and finally through cross-flow channels at the radially inner ends of the air interspaces to an outlet duct 22. Paths of constantlychanging cross-section both longitudinally and laterally are provided in the plate interspaces by the cross-corrugations 42 in the primary heat exchange zone and by other crosscorrugations 44 in those parts of the plate 11b radially within and beyond the primary heat exchange zone. The plates of the assembly are joined in concertina fashion as shown in Fig. 2, and the plate stack may comprise groups of the heat exchange plates separated by thicker plates 30 (and see Fig. 1). These latter plates have positioning lugs apertured to receive rods 32, Fig. 2, which support the heat exchanger between end frames (14 and 24, Fig. 1).
