Abstract

734,938. Plate heat-exchangers; air preheaters. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., C. A. June 22, 1953 [June 27, 1952], No. 16285/52. Classes 64 (1) and 64 (3). An annular heat:exchanger (e.g. an air preheater) comprises an assembly of arcuately formed corrugated plates alternating with similarly formed plain plates, alternate corrugated plates in the assembly being so corrugated that one of the heat exchanging fluids (e.g. combustion air) is caused to flow in a circumferential direction whilst the corrugations of the intermediate corrugated plates are such that the other heat exchanging fluid (e.g. turbine exhaust gas) may flow radially or alternatively axially through the annulus, the space 5 formed between the ends of the arcuately formed plate assembly providing inlet and outlet ducts for the fluid flowing in a circumferential direction. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement comprising alter.- nating corrugated sheets 2, 3 with interposed plain sheets 1. Cold combustion air enters the space 5 which houses a combustion chamber 4 cooled by the air. The air from the space 5 flows through the outer set of circumferential passages (see arrows) formed by corrugated plates 2 to a return member formed by radially corrugated sheets 10 from which the air flows back through the inner set of circumferential passages to the combustion chamber 4. Hot gas from the turbine exhaust enters the central passage 12 and flows through radially extending passages formed by corrugated plates 3 to an outer space 15 from which the cooled gas passes to an outlet duct 17. In Fig. 3 plain arcuate sheets 20 are interposed between alternating corrugated sheets 18, 19 to give an axial flow of the heating gases and a circumferential flow of the air to be heated through the heat-exchanger.
