Abstract

624,676. Plate heat exchangers. HEAT EXCHANGERS, Ltd., and RUDORFF, D. W. A. F. March 6, 1947, No. 6332. [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] Relates to apparatus for the indirect exchange of heat between fluids, e.g. between air and gases of the kind having the paths for the respective fluids flowing through the apparatus separated only by corrugated heat conducting sheets 6, 7 juxtaposed to form a stack or pile, with the corrugations on one sheet arranged at an angle, e.g. at right angles to the corrugations on an adjacent sheet. The invention consists in securing adjacent sheets together by spot welding at the points of contact of their corrugations. The spot welding may be effected at all points or alternatively at some only of the points of contact. In the form shown each outer sheet 9 of the pile is flat and is welded to the corrugations of the adjacent, corrugated and juxtaposed sheets 6 or 7. The marginal portion 10 of each corrugated sheet is upturned and the edge is profiled to fit into the corrugations of the adjacent sheet and is welded or otherwise secured thereto. Several units of different sizes may be spaced apart and connected in series such that the crosssectional area of the gas passages is progressively reduced as the gas is cooled while the cross-sectional area of the air passages is progressively increased as the air is heated (see Fig. 7) (not shown). Another arrangement shows units arranged in juxtaposed pairs.
