682,278. Regenerative heat-exchangers. DALIN, D. July 5, 1950 [July 5, 1949], No. 16818/50. Class 64 (i) [Also in Groups I and XXII] The heat transfer material in a regenerative heatexchanger comprises a plurality of mats stacked in flat juxtaposition and each made up of closely-spaced, parallel wires 29 across which at one side of the mat are secured (e.g. by welding) relatively widely spaced connecting wires acting also as spacers between adjacent mats in the stack. Cells formed by radial partitions 7, Fig. 4, in a rotary regenerative drum contain the stacked mats. In Fig. 3, the mats are mounted vertically and vary in width according to the convergence of the partitions. Displacement of individual mats is prevented by rails 32, 33 secured to the partitions 17, and by a clamping plate 34 secured to the inner surface of the outer wall 16 of the drum. Alternatively, mats all of identical shape are disposed horizontally and may take either of the forms shown in Figs. 6 and 8. The connecting wires may be flat sided (Fig. 7 not shown) to facilitate welding. The diameter of the wires 29 is preferably within the range of 1 to 4 m/m. and the material used may be soft iron or common steel but for use with very hot gases, stainless steel or a suitable heatwithstanding alloy is preferred. Alternatively only the first third of the wires in the direction of gas flow may be made of stainless steel. The connecting wires are preferably of stainless steel in all cases, and their diameter is preferably the same as that of the wires 29 but a slightly heavier wire may be used. Each mat may be made up individually but preferably the mats are made up in large strips or sheets Figs. 5 and 9 (not-shown) which are then cut up to the required sizes.
