Abstract
633,250. Plate heat-exchangers MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and WINSTONE, J. Feb. 6, 1948, No. 3598. [Class 64(iii)] In a secondary surface heat-exchanger which comprise a matrix of thin-walled fluid-carrying tubes of elongated or flattened cross-section provided with external secondary heat-transfer surfaces comprising thin metal corrugated sheets which form airways, and which abut one another when assembled in the matrix, the corrugations of contiguous sheets are disposed at an angle to each other so that the corrugations on one sheet cannot enter the troughs of the corrugations of a contiguous sheet. In the form shown, the thin-walled flat-sided tubes a of a three-row tube unit are sandwiched between two corrugated thin metal sheets b, c which are crimped at d and e to locate the tubes. The corrugations on adjacent sheets are inclined at an angle of about 10 degrees to each other and are bonded together at their points of contact. The tubes a may each be fitted with an internal stiffener f comprising a rectangularly corrugated thin metal strip which is bonded to the opposing walls of the tube. The matrix may be assembled from pre-bonded units or it may be assembled from individual components.
