Abstract

633,379. Making heat-exchangers. BERLIN, D. W., and LANDBERG, S. E. June 2, 1947, No. 14524. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 29, 1947.] [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Electric welding.-Secondary heat emitting plates 14, Fig. 2, of corrugated sheet iron are welded to the outside of the corrugated primary heat emitting plates 13 forming the hollow body of the radiator containing the heating medium. The primary plates are first welded together and the secondary plates welded on subsequently by one or more electrodes 15, 16 on the same or opposite sides of the radiator which may be filled with air, water or other coolant. The electrodes may be connected in series or parallel making single or two or more simultaneous welds or the plates may be earthed by a contact clamp. In modifications, the primary plates may be formed from one doubled-up plate, the secondary plates may have a greater number of corrugations than shown in Fig. 2 and may be on one side of the radiator only, the primary plate on the other side being coated with metal sheet or foil having a low heat emissivity, the surface being preferably polished. In another modification the corrugations 26, Fig. 4, in the primary plates 27 are horizontal and disposed so that the heating medium has a zig-zag path between the two ports 28a and b, the secondary plates 28 being welded to the primary plates with their corrugations at right angles to the corrugations 26.
