Abstract
1528864 Plate heat exchangers SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 9 July 1976 [11 July 1975] 28576/76 Heading F4S In a cross-flow heat exchanger unit, the fluid flow passages are defined by spaced-apart sheets 10 of metal foil (e.g. of aluminium or copper of thickness 50 to 250 Ám.) the edges of which are formed so that when the sheets are stacked (e.g. with adjacent sheets turned relatively through 90 degrees), adjacent sheets are joined to form the fluid passage side walls by a Z- shaped edge 13 of one sheet being placed against an L-shaped edge 15 of an adjacent sheet and then folding the L-shaped edges over the Z- shaped edges. The joint surfaces may be glued, heat sealed, or soldered together. Sealing at the corners of the unit may be effected by applying a sealing agent (17, Figs. 8 and 9) of silicone rubber or polyethylene. The heat exchange surface may be increased in area by embossing with elongate indentations such as 14 or with pyramidal or spherical indentations. The foil may be lacquered or oxidized to resist corrosion. A heat exchanger may comprise a plurality of the units arranged in a block (Figs. 8 and 9) or in line (Fig. 11).
