Abstract

1285155 Plate heat exchangers A E MERRYFULL 22 March 1971 7485/71 Heading F4S A hollow plate in a heat exchanger consists of two plates at least one of which is corrugated, said plates being disposed face to face and sealed together around their peripheries and also at selected intermediate zones to define flaw paths between the plates, the corrugations in said plate (or both plates as appropriate) being stepped along step lines 15 extending transversely of the corrugations. In the arrangement shown in which both plates 12 are corrugated, passages 13, Fig. 3, are defined by the plates and extend between header tubes 11 welded to the ends of the plates. The headers may alternatively be formed integrally with the plates (Figs. 4, 5). The headers may be transversely positioned to provide a sinuous fluid flow path through the hollow plate (Figs. 6, 7). In another form (Figs. 8-10) the plates are spaced apart except at short lines of contact (18,19) intermediate the steplines 15, so that fluid flow is transverse to the corrugations.
