Abstract
1,045,688. Air-cooled surface steam condensers; heat exchange elements. F. HERMANN. July 23, 1963 [July 24, 1962], No. 29168/63. Heading F4S. An air-cooled steam condenser for use with steam-operated power engines comprises a plurality of heat exchanger blocks 8 formed from staggered rows of tubes of rectangular cross-section and containing internal fin members 3, Fig. 1 (drawings not shown), firmly secured to the inside of the tube walls 2. There are passages 6, Fig. 2, between adjacent tubes, the ends of which are sealed by flat iron bar members 6<SP>1</SP>, and channels 5 between adjacent rows formed by spacer bars of iron 4 or of plastic material 7. The blocks are positioned to form, in plan view, a square or polygon and are tilted to form alternately V and inverted V-shaped spaces 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3; respectively each having sealed transverse front and rear walls 9, the latter spaces are also sealed by a roof-like member 13. All spaces 10 are interconnected at the top through a compartment 20 and steam from a distribution line is passed into each space through pipes 11 to flow past baffles 14 through the passages 5 and into spaces 10<SP>1</SP> from where it is exhausted through apertures 21. To prevent ice forming the gases from passages 5 are directed by plates 17, 18 arranged in V configuration to the additional heat exchange elements 15 comprised of tubes similar to tubes 1. The lower ends of plates 18 are immersed in the condensate in the flash tank 19 which extends beneath all blocks 8 and which has overflow pipes 24 connected to a condensate escape line 25. Situated on the roof covering the condenser is an aerial fan 22, Fig. 4, which draws cooling air through the tubes 1 and 15 and exhausts vertically through a diffuser 23.
