Abstract
658,614. Tubular heat-exchangers; surface condensers. AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVE CO. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5630. Convention date, July 25, 1944. [Class 64(iii)] Air is induced by a fan 12 over transversely finned tubes disposed in an open framework 2 thereby cooling or condensing the fluid flowing through the tubes, the tubes being arranged in banks with conduits leading therefrom to inlet and outlet headers, the framework having a top wall 6 provided with a duct 8 containing the fan and side walls 29, 31 so dimensioned as to leave the framework open at its bottom portion to admit the air induced by the ian. The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 may comprise four banks 17 of tubes, Fig. 4, in which each bank includes five sinuous tubes 22 each provided with square fins 23 and connected to inlet and outlet headers 24, 26 from which pipes 25, 27 lead respectively to the main headers 18, 19. Alternatively the tube assembly may comprise twelve banks of straight finned tubes 35, Fig. 7, the banks being arranged in opposed pairs, and each bank having an inlet header and an outlet header respectively connected to the main headers 38, 39. In this form the tubes may be of elongated cross-section.
