[Class 64(i)] In a tubular heat-exchanger, an external heating fluid, e.g. furnace gases, flows overtubes 41-44 containing a fluid, e.g. boiler feedwater, to be heated, the external fluid rising in the direction A, and the internal fluid in the direction D to C. For example, an economizer placed at the outer side of a bank of boiler tubes 1, consists of a bank of W-tubes between headers and having: four limbs 41-44 bearing longitudinal fins. 8 which may be tangential as claimed in Specification 628,416. The feedwater flows in parallel from an inlet header into each limb 41 remote from the furnace and flows sinuously in the general upward direction DC in each W-tube, through limbs 42, 43 to the hottest limb 44 from which it is collected by an outlet header. Each limb is inclined to the horizontal so that the water flows continuously upward through each W-tube. Furnace gases rise in the direction A, through the passages formed by the fins between the tube limbs, being cooled as they pass progressively from the hottest row of tubes 44 to the coldest row 41.
