640,680. Tubular heat-exchangers for heating feedwater &c. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 17, 1947, No. 33314. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1943. [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] The invention relates to a heat exchanger for fluids, one of which is condensible, and apparatus is described for heating boiler feedwater by means of steam taken from the intermediate stages of a turbine. The water to be heated passes through a chest 3 by way of an inlet 4 and an outlet 5. Intermediately the water passes through a tubular system 10 in a lower unit 2 where it is heated by the condensate from an upper unit 1 containing a tubular system 7 in to which it next passes by way of a pipe 12 in the chest to condense steam entering from an inlet 6. The condensate drains from the upper to the lower unit by a pipe 9. The steam inlet 6 and the condensate pipe 9 communicate with cylindrical baffles 13, 14, arranged coaxially in the upper and lower units respectively so that the heating fluid flows outwardly from the chest along the middle of the units and then inwardly along the outsides of the baffles. The heat exchange units 1, 2 may comprise U-tubes arranged so that their limbs lie in planes which are radial to the common axis of the units and baffles as shown or in a modification (not shown) the limbs of the U-tubes may be arranged in parallel planes and astride a plane baffle, in which case the heating fluid in each unit passes up one side of the baffle and then down the other side. A battery of the heat exchangers may be interconnected by flanges on the water pipes 4, 5.
