Abstract

865,426. Forced-flow steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Dec. 11, 1958 [Dec. 16, 1957], No. 39121/57. Class 123(2) A forced-flow, once-through boiler generating steam at a high, perhaps supercritical, pressure and at a low pressure is heated by the CO 2 coolant from a nuclear reactor, the gas flowing downwards through an upright cylindrical pressure vessel 13 containing the boiler heating surfaces which are constituted by two opposed tube banks 27, 29. The tube banks are identical and consist of side-by-side mounted low and high pressure economizer sections 41, 43, L.P. vaporizing section 45, H.P. vaporizing section 47, L.P. superheater 49 and H.P. superheater 51. The L.P. and H.P. tube banks are built up of vertical panels 57, Fig. 3, of horizontal, multiple-bend sinuous tubes disposed wholly within the pressure vessel except for the end parts which pass out through the vessel wall in thermal sleeves 73 and are respectively connected to L.P. inlet and outlet headers 75, 77 and H.P. inlet and outlet headers 81, 83. The tube panels are supported in the vessel by straps which are secured to beams 91. To facilitate assembly of the panels and to permit utilization of a high percentage of the cross - sectional area of the vessel for occupation by tube panels, the thermal sleeves 73 in the two sides of the tube bank are inclined outwardly from one another from their inner to their outer ends as shown in Fig. 3. Sheet metal baffles 95 are arranged to bound the banks 27, 29 so as to preclude the flow of coolant through the spaces 31, 33. Specification 865,427 is referred to.
