Abstract

837,994. Steam superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 29, 1957 [Nov. 29, 1956], No. 37375/57. Class 123(3) A steam superheater 15 disposed in a gas downpass of a water-tube boiler consists of a double bank of nested sinuous tubes each having a series of straight, horizontal portions interconnected by integral return bends 36 and is supported by the front and rear wall lining tubes 26, 27 of the downpass, these tubes themselves consisting of superheater tubes which are suspended from upper structural steelwork. As shown in Fig. 4, brackets 38 are welded to the lining tubes adjacent alternate return bends 36, the brackets each being formed with an upper recess 39 in which rests a horizontal tube 28. The tubes 28 are series-connected to form an ascending spiral within the cage formed by the lining tubes 26, 27, the spiral and the superheater 15 being connected between inlet and outlet headers 32, 33. Alternate return bends on each side of the superheater banks have welded-on brackets 41 the lower edges of which rest on the adjacent tube 28. Straps 46 connect each supported return bend to the unsupported bend immediately below. The arrangement permits of expansion and contraction movements of the superheater tubes, the brackets 41 sliding on the tubes 28. Specification 489,758 is referred to.
