Abstract
687,836. Water-tube steam boilers; superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Nov. 20, 1951 [Nov. 21,1950], No. 27190/51. Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii) In a steam &c. boiler with steam-generating tubes 3, 6 lining the combustion chamber, the top portion 2 of the combustion chamber is reduced in depth and locates a superheater in the form of widely-spaced tube panels 12 each comprising a sinuous tube with vertical lengths 12<SP>1</SP>, extending in front of the gas outlet 9 from the combustion chamber, and downwardly inclined lengths 12<SP>11</SP>, extending across said top portion 2. Adjacent tube lengths of a panel are connected in series by upper and lower return bends which extend, respectively, between the tubes 3 lining the roof 5 and front wall 4 so as to be outside the gas flow path, and the four rows of lower return bends 13 are each connected by small drainage pipes 17, leading from the lowest points of the bends, to discharge collectors 21 ... 24. Each panel is supported at the upper return bends by the roof tubes 3, and, further, by a pair of sinuous steam-supply tubes 25, Fig. 2, which are of smaller diameter than the tube of the panel and extend vertically on opposite sides of the panel from the boiler steam drum 10 to a branch piece 26 at the end of the lowest tube length 12", the branch piece forming a rest for the second lowest tube length 12" and the tubes 25 being welded together as shown. In a modification the tubes 25 are straight and are connected by bars which are welded therebetween and form rests for the tube lengths 12".
