688,585. Water-tube steam boilers, etc.; superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX. Ltd. Jan. 26, 1951 [Jan. 30, 1950], No. 2082/51. Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii) In a steam, &c. boiler, a radiant superheater, &c. 10 is disposed in the furnace chamber 1 near its outlet 100 to a mixing chamber 17 followed by a down-pass locating a convection superheater 15 and feedwater heater &c. 19, 20, 21, 22, said superheater 10 being constituted by inverted U-shaped tubes which are arranged in a number of spaced vertical panels and define a passage for the flame core. At the front end of the panels the tubes of alternate panels are connected to saturated steam inlet headers 9, the tubes of the remaining panels being connected to superheated steam collecting headers 12, and at their rear ends the tubes of adjacent pairs of panels are respectively connected to intermediate headers 11. The intermediate parts of the tubes 10 parallel to the roof of the furnace chamber may be brought into alignment to form a lining for said roof. In a modification the panels 10, of substantially straight vertical tubes, are disposed in a recess in the wall of the furnace chamber opposite the outlet 100.
