704,479. Water-tube steam boilers; controlling superheat. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1951 [Sept. 28, 1950], No. 21801/51. Classes 123(2) and 123(3) A steam boiler comprises a combustion chamber 10, lined with steam-generating tubes 12, 13, 14 extending from lower headers 18, 19 and 20, 21 respectively and fitted with burners 38 in its front wall, a main gas pass 36 leading rearwardly from the chamber above the burners and locating a superheater or reheater 31, and a by-pass 26 having an inlet 28 below the burners, the temperature of superheat being regulated by dampers 61 and 62, 63, 64 at the exits of economizer passes 54 and 52 forming extensions of the said passes 26, 36. As shown, the superheater is in the form of serially-connected return-bend tubes arranged in three banks disposed wholly within the pass 36, but in a modification the first two banks in the direction of gas flow extend into the lateral portion of the by-pass 26.
