Abstract
687,711. Water-tube steam boilers. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING-SUPERHEATER, Inc. Aug. 3, 1948 [Sept. 16, 1947], No. 20479/48. Class 123 (ii) In a boiler comprising an upper steam-andwater drum, not shown, connected to lower water drums 2, 6 respectively by main and auxiliary banks 3, 5 of steam-generating tubes which, between them, define a furnace 4 fired through openings 12 in the front wall 9 of the boiler, the ends of the upper drum are connected to the ends of the lower drums by downcomers 7, 8, the area of the downcomers 8 at the rear of the boiler, where the rate of steam generation is a maximum, being greater than that of the downcomers at the front. In the form shown there are a single row of downcomers 7, and three rows of downcomers 8, all enclosed within an air-tight casing 18 which surrounds the boiler to provide a conduit 18a for the passage of combustion air from an inlet 19 to the burner openings 12. A superheater 20, comprising a bundle of U-shaped tubes connected to inlet and outlet headers 21, 22, is preferably located in the main tube bank 3.
