Abstract

546,763. Water-tube steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and SPARKS, C. H. March 28, 1941, No. 4186. [Class 123 (ii)] The gases from the furnaces 1, 1<1> flow into a longitudinal gas passage 3 between the furnaces across banks of tubes 10 connected to upper and lower drums 14, 13 and arranged in staggered relationship and in longitudinal rows, the pitch of the tubes being increased and the rows shortened towards the front of the boiler to increase the flow of gases across the tubes at the front end of the gas passage. Superheaters 12 are disposed between the tubes. Downcomers 16 are shielded by refractory coverings and by boiler tubes 18. The gases flow from the gas passage 3 into transverse passages 33 containing additional water tube banks 35 connected to the ends of the upper and lower drums extending beyond the furnace chambers.
