Abstract

791,843. Tubular heat exchangers. OSTBO, N. March 12, 1956 [March 12, 1955], No. 7700/56. Class 64(3) A heat exchanger comprises parallelconnected tubes 32 through which one of 'the heat exchanging fluids flows, said tubes being wound around a central channel 6 so as to constitute a helical partition between the turns of which the other fluid flows, and the central channel 6 communicating at one end thereof with the tubes 32. In the form shown, a casing 1 surrounds the tubes and oil flows over the tubes to be heated by steam passed through the tubes. The tubes 32 may be disposed as shown in Fig. 1, in two helically coiled groups each of three tubes forming two parallel helical flow paths for the oil. Alternatively (Fig. 2) a single helical flow path may be formed by three tubes 32 and by three further tubes 33 wound helically adjacent the wall of the casing 1, the tubes 32 and 33 being fed in parallel from the central tube 6. A small gap is provided between adjacent tubes 32 to assist heat transfer. The helical paths may be of variable pitch.
