Abstract

607,717. Heat-exchangers. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., MILLINGEN, R. D. VAN, and OGSTON, W. M. Dec. 13, 1945, No. 33835. [Class 64(iii)] A heat-exchanger _for two fluids comprises a plurality of ribbed tubes 2, each tube having a rib 3 in the form of a free helix along the length of the tube, and. a plurality of non-ribbed tubes distributed among them in a regular pattern, the tubes being held together in a bundle, e.g. by a wire 4 whereby the ribs maintain the tubes in uniform radially spaced relationship. The ends of the tubes pass through end plates 11 and lateral ducts 12 are provided in the casing 10 as inlet and outlet ports for the fluid flowing between the tubes, and to allow fluid entering through these ports to flow freely across the tubes, the ribs may be spaced from the end of the tubes. In the form shown, every third tube in each row has a rib. In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of an equiangular pitched tube bundle, the tubes 5, 6, 7 in each row are arranged with the tube 5 wound with wire 8 in one sense and the tube 6 wound in the opposite sense while the tube 7 is plain, this arrangement providing that no two wires 8 of two different, tubes 5 are in contact nor are any two wires 9 of two different tubes 6 in contact, thus preventing the tubes being separated by a distance equal to twice the wire thickness.
