Abstract
626,075. Heat exchangers. FRENKEL, M. C. Sept. 4, 1946, Nos. 26640/46, 13813/47 and 19674/47. [Class 64(iii)] Heat exchangers are provided with deflecting devices so that layers of fluid flowing adjacent to the heat-transferring walls may be periodically deflected to the centre of the stream and replaced by central layers which have not yet been in contact with the walls, the layer-transposition being arranged to occur over a complete flow cross-section. In its simplest form, Fig. 1, the device is shown applied to a plate-type heat exchanger having flat parallel tubes 12, 13 communicating with a header tank 18. The layer-transposing device is cusped and includes bran ch tubes 16, 17 by means of which the inner flow-layers 21 in the tube 12 become the outer flow-layers in the tube 13. As applied to the heatexchanger shown in Fig. 5, the inner flow-layers 61 in the tube 51 are collected by the tube-stump 59, and, after passing through the tank 60, become the outer layers in the tubes 52 and 53, the former outer layers 62 being guided by the tube-stumps 56, 57 towards the centres of the tubes 52 and 53. In a modification, the outer flow-layers may be withdrawn from the heat-exchanger altogether. In the device shown in Fig. 11, the conical surface 91 deflects the outer layers 93 towards the centre of the stream and nozzles 92 guide the inner layers 94 outwardly. The third Provisional Specification illustrates a similar device for fluids flowing outside a tube.
