Abstract

638,298. Tubular heat - exchangers. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. April 29, 1947, No. 11440. [Class 64(iii)] Tubular apparatus for the exchange of heat between two fluids comprises a battery of Z-shaped tubes each tube being identical in length and shape with that tube which is adjacent to it in the direction transverse to the plane of the Z but being identical only in length and angularity with an adjacent tube lying within the plane of the Z, all the tubes lying within said plane nesting with each other. The tube battery is arranged in an enclosing oduct through which the other fluid flows in parallel flow or contra flow, the tubes at their ends being directed transversely of the path of the second mentioned fluid to their supply and discharge points 5 and 6 respectively. In the form shown, the tubes 4 are arranged in banks 7, each bank being provided with end supports 8 and 9 forming inlet and outlet header blocks respectively. A number of blocks are arranged in the heat exchanger body 1 and are secured therein by means of angle iron members 10. Adjacent header blocks may have flat, smooth sides to form a gas tight joint with or without sealing or packing compounds between, or interlocking tongues and grooves may be formed on each block. In Fig. 1 all the tubes in any one bank are identical in shape and size but in another embodiment the tubes in any one bank whilst of identical overall length may be arranged so that their transversly-directed ends increase in length from a minimum to a maximum. The header blocks may be formed with complementary semi-circular recesses for gripping the ends of the tubes or alternatively the blocks may be formed by the powdered metallurgy technique as described in Specification 618,905. Separators 13 may be arranged between adjacent rows of tubes each separator comprising a corrugated strip of resilient material, bent as shown in Fig. 3, and being under slight tension when in position.
