Abstract
732,468. Tubular heat-exchangers. SERCK RADIATORS, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1953 [Dec. 15, 1952], No. 31699/52. Class 64 (3). A heat-exchanger comprises at least one tube a having within it two or more coaxial and oppositely wound mutually contacting helices made from metal ribbon or wire and adapted to impart opposite swirling motions to the inner and outer parts of a liquid stream flowing along the tube. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement comprising inner and outer concentric tubes a, b. Oil is passed through the annular space between the tubes and steam flows through the inner tube b. Around the tube b is wound a single start helix c of wire or thin metal ribbon and around and in contact with helix c is arranged a multistart helix d of opposite hand. In Fig. 2 the inner member comprises a solid or tubular core b, the steam now flowing around the outside of the tube a, and as shown, two oppositely wound helices c, d are arranged in the annular space between the tube and the core, the two helices being in contact with each other and with the core and tube.
