Abstract

1468421 Tubular heat exchangers TSENTRAL NI I PROEKT KONSTRUKT KOTLOTURBIN INST IMENI II POLZUNOVA 30 May 1974 23952/74 Heading F4S In a shell and tube heat exchanger for heating viscous fluids such as fuel oil using steam as the heating medium and comprising an array of outer tubes 4 located within the shell with each outer tube containing a heating element in the form of a field tube 5 and 7 and the fluid to be heated passing through the annular passage between the tubes 4 and 5, the array of outer tubes 4 is divided into a plurality of groups I-VI such that the fluid to be heated flows in series through the respective groups, the number of outer tubes in each group being different and the total cross-sectional area of the annular passages in each successive group decreasing in proportion to the decrease in viscosity of the fluid being heated as it passes through the successive groups. As shown the outer tubes are divided into groups by partitions 21, 22, 23 and 28, 29 which respectively subdivide the header chambers 20 and 26 into which the opposite ends of the annular passages open. The tubes 5 and 7 comprising each field tube are closed at one end by plugs and the tube 5 is formed with external longitudinally extending fins (6, Fig. 4, not shown). Heating medium in the form of steam enters a distribution header 11 through an inlet 13 and is passed along the tubes 7 towards the closed end thereof. The steam, together with condensate formed, then enters the tube 5 via a series of openings 31 inclined at an angle # to the axis of the tube 7 in the range 60-80 degrees and flows back through the space between the tubes 5 and 7 towards a collection chamber 14. Condensate is removed from this chamber through a drain pipe 15 and the steam is passed via a pipe 16 into the inter tube space 17 of the shell 1 where it condenses; condensate is removed from the shell through a drain pipe 18. Preferably the heat exchanger is inclined at an angle of 2-5 degrees to the horizontal.
